Avionics expert Dr.K Radhakrishnan today took over as the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from Dr.G Madhavan Nair .
He was the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
Starting his career as an Avionics Engineer in 1971 at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, he commendably held several decisive positions in ISRO .
As the Director of VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram he had led a team of 4500 professionals including more than 2000 Engineers and Scientists. He has been a main man in the Chandrayaan mission, responsible for realization of PSLV C-11 launch vehicle with a new set of strap on motors and a new mission design and also the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) that impacted on the surface of Moon in november 2008 which later established the presence of water in moon.
He graduated as an Electrical Engineer from Kerala University in 1970, Radhakrishnan also holds an MBA from IIM, Bangalore, and later in 2000 he was awarded PhD by IIT Kharagpur for his thesis on “Some Strategies for Management of Indian Earth Observation System”.
He was behind the formulation of the Indian Human Space Flight programme through a nationally orchestrated effort and the Project Report has been approved by the Space Commission and endorsed by a high level National Committee.
He has also worked as the Director of National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) that ranks among the premier organisations in the world for satellite remote sensing ground segment, applications and capacity building.
He established an Ocean Information Web Site that is acclaimed as the icon of Ocean data world over.
“It is with high hopes and great expectations that I am taking over this responsibility. It is a huge task that has been entrusted on me. I am confident that we will be able to achieve our goals with the dedicated work and support of the entire team of ISRO,” he said after assuming charge.
Hailing from Irinjalakkuda in Thrissur district of Kerala, Radhakrishnan is also a keen enthusiast of classical arts and music. He is a great Kathakali fan, he had also occasionally performed the dance, taking time off his busy schedule.
We can hope him to take the missions of ISRO to a greater level. He has got a great task ahead.
